Gator Walk!

Image
Hey everyone! Today, Adair and I took a nature hike with our friends Corey and Becka, through the swamps about a half-hour south of New Orleans. We saw several gators right off the path, as well as various other wildlife. Here are several pictures from our trip: What a fun lookin' bunch. Becka should know, you can't move during the panorama shot, or you come out looking like some sort of Hindu goddess. Adair's best angle.   Adair in the swamps. Our first gator sighting! Double gators! Can you spot 'em? We were about 25 feet away! Better double gator shot. These guys were humming along upstream. Honestly, the biggest frickin' spider I have ever seen with my own two eyes. His body alone was at least the size of my thumb. Gator close up. I guess this is a juvenile, unfortunately we didn't see his mama, who is over 9 feet and is often spotted in this area. The endpoint

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dane

Hey everyone, Adair and I had a pretty good week, having gotten back to school/work after our long and unexpected hurrication. In addition, we have ventured out to a few of the local restaurants and hangouts around town, and really enjoyed what we found. First, I knew that my first priority was to find a little breakfast place where we could go on weekends, if we got the hankering for a greasy spoon. We had tried “Dot’s Diner” in our area of town a few weeks back, and we weren’t thrilled (it wasn’t even charmingly dingy, it was just grimy with impolite staff), so we figured we needed to look closer to the real New Orleans area to find something satisfactory. Adair whipped out the guidebook that her mom had given us (thanks Becky!) and found us an awesome spot in the Uptown district, specializing in benedicts of various shapes and sizes. Adair had a strawberry waffle, because that’s how she rolls, and I decided to go full-scale New Orleans and get the Crawfish Etouffe Bened

Superdome Trip

Image
Hi everyone, Last weekend Adair and I, along with our friends Corey and Becka, took a trip to the Superdome to see the Tulane Green Wave play the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Here are some pictures! Corey is the gangly ginger, Bekah is the mini-human on the left. Didn't have a whole lot in the way of school colors to wear (olive green and light blue), but I did wear my hat.

A Little Perspective

Image
Hey everyone, Big thanks go out to Janet Bassett for giving me the idea to post a map showing where we are living in relation to some of the other landmarks in town. The first is fairly zoomed out to include where Adair works, the second contains the same landmarks, just a bit closer. If you are still wondering where something is in particular, let me know and I will point it out! P.S. I know that the pictures sometimes run into the blog text on the right. Not sure why it does that, sorry!

Hurricane Life

Image
Life during a hurrication without power  Our poor poor pool...  I checked, no Keebler elves living inside. Powerless  Really the only flooding we saw in our area Sad, greasy, sweaty hurricane faces. This is after 72 hours without power. A million degrees in our apartment, and rising.

Hurricane Video Log: Entry 5

Oh I forgot about this one. Here I meant to take a picture of this lizard, but accidentally took a video instead.

Volleyball!

I would be sorely remiss if I didn't wish the Rowinski-Miller team good luck at the annual Lake Limerick Labor Day Weekend Volleyball Tournament today. I wish we were there and I miss you all a ton. Get out there and smoke 'em!

I've Got the Power

Hi all! At approximately 8:00 am this morning, Adair and I got power restored to our apartment after three full days of serious discomfort and pain. It's hard to complain too much, because there are definitely people out there in Louisiana that had/have it much harder than us, but this last week was maybe one of the most trying periods of our lives. We had heat indices of over 100 degrees every day after the hurricane finally moved out of our area, and at night I don't think it ever got to be less than 90 degrees inside our apartment. In addition, the humidity not only made everything less bearable, but also made every single corner of our apartment feel so wet that I am sure it will take days to dry our place out. On the other hand, Adair and I had each other to lean on the entire time, and we make a great hurricane team. I don't think there was a single time when we turned on each other out of discomfort or anger, and I think we should be pretty proud of that. Throu
